Robert & Audrey’s VW Mini Bus Camping Wedding in Silverton was a fun-filled and off-beat wedding day that was the perfect combination of the two of them and their circles of loved ones. See, Audrey grew up around VWs as her dad has helped restore and repair vintage Volkwagens in the Grand Valley for over 20 years now. Between VW showcases and rendevous, racing and camping, the vintage vehicles are a big part of her life – and what brought the two together as it happens!
Robert worked near the VW shop and they would run into each other pretty consistently. After being told (wrongly) that she was married, Robert never pursued his crush on Audrey until one day when she was gushing to him and one of his coworkers about an upcoming race she was heading to. He just couldn’t help but ask if she was single and Audrey gave him her number.
“Texts turned into lengthy letters we would send back and forth each day while I was away racing. When I got back, I was so nervous to see him across the street I remember one time I basically ran to KCW, and Robert saw me and texted me right away – putting a giant blushed-face smile across my face. He took me to mini golf, go carts, and bumper boats, then to Sushi, and for a walk by the river for our first date a few days after we returned from racing. And we haven’t left each others sides since!” Audrey told me.
After Robert proposed, the two were at the annual VW Showcase in Silverton at Kendall Mountain and they explored the area on their own one evening. At the top of the stairs of the lodge on site, they took in the surroundings and Audrey told him she wanted to marry him there. One year later, we were gathering in a field of wildflowers and VW mini buses for their camping wedding in Silverton – everything they dreamed of and more coming true!
Audrey wore flowers in her hair, with a crown that four other women in her family wore – originally her grandmother’s wedding crown. She works at Garvey’s Gardens in GJ and has been busy planning her flowers for months and it was so fun to see what she ended up picking for the day. Audrey’s bus, Greta, was the backdrop of a lot of the day – her beautiful yellow tone perfectly blending and standing out with the mountain greenery all at once.
After their ceremony in the meadow, the group made their way to the main street of Silverton to partake in an old town tradition from back in the day. Whenever a couple would get married in Silverton, the groom (traditionally) would push the bride in a wheelbarrow down the main street to celebrate. So we did just that, with much hooting and hollering and cheers from passersby on the sidewalk and cars on the street! The guests who came to watch this old tradition formed an arch for them to ride through at the end, and all of it made some of my favorite memories and photographs of a wedding. On our way back to Kendall Mountain a random vacation rental of people came out and asked if the newlyweds wanted to do a shot with them, a truly west-slope-mountain-town sort of occurrence lol!
The evening’s events resumed back around the buses as a bon fire grew and the evening chilled. The sun sat and toasts and dances were shared, and the couple cut their beautiful cake made by Audrey’s cousin. As the night grew dark, sparklers were passed out to send the newlyweds on their way to their honeymoon suite at the Grand Imperial Hotel downtown. They drove off in a VW mini bus with cans tied to the back – the cutest dang thing you’ve ever seen a couple ride off in! We ended the night with some photos downtown before they retreated for the night to their suite. It was the grandest of days!
