Eric contacted me a while back about a surprise proposal for his then-girlfriend Colette, and the plan took many shapes as we drew near the big day. She was flying in to meet him along a trip he was taking, and the initial goal was to propose at Dead Horse Point at sunset as they explored Moab together. Flights, though, are always a little up-in-the-air and proposals by nature need backup plans! Eventually the need to implement a backup was clear, so we planned to meet here in my town of Grand Junction instead, to cut about two hours off their journey and still get sunset light. We planned their surprise proposal at Colorado National Monument, we shared locations by phone, and set off to surprise Colette.
I found the two taking selfies with the canyons below and hid around bushes, pretending to photograph the landscapes to get close without drawing attention. Eric dropped to one knee and I came out from hiding to capture the moment and the unfolding excitement and disbelief! We did a few portraits after my presence was revealed as the last golden light lit the cliffs before I left them to enjoy blue hour and head on to Moab. It was such a beautiful evening! Take a peek at some of my favorites from their surprise proposal at Colorado National Monument:
