When Ashley and Rhiannon reached out about pet family photos, they had a specific reason for the timing. Moose, their nearly 17-year-old pup with the floppy ears and oversized feet, was facing health issues. They wanted professional images of him—of all of them together as a family—while he was still feeling up for it.
This is the kind of session that matters in a way that’s hard to articulate until you’re in it. Not every photo session is about a milestone or celebration. Sometimes it’s about honoring who’s here with us right now, documenting the love that exists in this moment, before that moment passes.
Moose has since crossed the rainbow bridge, which makes these images even more precious. But during our session at Aesthetic Collective in downtown Grand Junction, he was present, curious, treat-motivated, and very much himself. And that’s exactly what Ashley and Rhiannon wanted to remember.

Why Aesthetic Collective Works for Pet Family Photos
We shot this session at Aesthetic Collective, a shared studio space in downtown Grand Junction. For pet photography, the space offers something that’s hard to find elsewhere: the controlled environment of a studio with the warmth and aesthetic appeal of a styled interior.
The space is open concept with beautiful natural light, exposed brick walls, and carefully chosen furniture that photographs well. It’s clutter-free and easy to style, which matters when you’re trying to create clean, timeless images rather than worrying about what’s in the background.
Here’s why this kind of space works so well for pet family sessions:
Can be lower stress than in-home sessions: Your home is lived-in, which is beautiful, but also means potential visual clutter, tricky lighting, and limited space to move around. At Aesthetic Collective, everything is already styled and the light is consistently good. If you’re worried about your home as a background, this is a great alternative.
Can be better than outdoor sessions for certain dogs: Some dogs get antsy outside. They want to explore, sniff, chase. Which is a total vibe for some folks, and a nightmare for others! For a session focused on connection and portraits rather than action, a controlled indoor space keeps everyone (pets included) more focused and calm.
Privacy and comfort: It’s a private space during your session time. No passersby, no other dogs to distract, no worrying about weather. Just you, your pets, and the photographer.
Important note: The space works great for mini sessions (30-60 minutes). For longer sessions, plan to take your dogs outside for bathroom breaks. We kept Moose and Stevie’s session efficient and comfortable, which at 17 years old, Moose especially appreciated. Pets, like children, don’t have very long attention spans anyway!

The Importance of Timing
Ashley and Rhiannon knew Moose’s time was limited. They didn’t wait for the “perfect moment” or a special occasion. They reached out when Moose was still feeling well enough to participate, still interested in carrots, still himself.
By acting when they did, they got images that truly capture who he was—Moose being Moose.
This is something I want people to understand about pet photography: the right time is while your pet is still here and still feeling good. While they can still show you their personality, even if that time feels bittersweet because you know it’s limited.
Why Pet Family Photos Matter
Here’s what I want to say clearly: your family is your family, regardless of whether it includes children.
Too many people shy away from professional family photos because they “just” have pets. As if pets aren’t family. As if the bond you have with the creatures you share your home with, care for daily, and love deeply somehow doesn’t deserve documentation.
I’ve started offering pet family photos specifically for this reason. So many of us are childfree or childless, and our families look different than the traditional nuclear family structure. Our families include our dogs, our cats, our chosen family members. These relationships deserve to be celebrated and documented with the same care and intention as any other family portraits.
Moose and Stevie aren’t “just dogs” to Ashley and Rhiannon. They are family members with distinct personalities, histories, inside jokes, daily routines. Moose’s big feet. Stevie’s friendly energy. The way they all fit together as a unit. That’s a family. That deserves professional documentation.

Pet Family Photos: A Service I’m Excited to Offer
If you’ve been putting off family photos because your family doesn’t include kids, or because you feel like “it’s just us and the dog,” I want you to know: that’s exactly who these sessions are for.
Your pets are part of your story. They’re in your daily life, your routines, your homes and hearts. They age faster than we’d like, and the window for capturing them at their best is shorter than we want to acknowledge.
Whether your pet is a senior like Moose, facing health challenges, or young and vibrant with years ahead—these photos matter. They document who’s here with you now. They honor the relationships that make your life full.
