With a pretty good chance of rain in the forecast, Eric and I drove down to Telluride last weekend for our first time ever. We wanted to explore the town a little bit before meeting up with Dayton and Chelse for their Telluride engagement session at Alta Lakes. Even with the crazy rain storms blowing through, the place was BEAUTIFUL. I can see the hype for sure! The hourly forecast suggested we’d have a potential break in the rain around our session in the evening, so we all decided to keep with the plan as scheduled.
We met up in town to drive out to the Alta Lakes area together. Dayton and Chelse camp there from time to time and knew the area well. Their last trip down Chelse sent me photos along their adventures and I was so excited and impatient for their session to be here! The two met in school back home on the east coast – where their wedding will be held next summer. It was fun to hear about their adventures here in Colorado and how they moved here for Chelse’s job. She even works with Jessica, a past AMP bride! It’s a small world out here on the western slope, I swear!
At long last we made our way up the winding road to the remaining ghost town of Alta. While not exactly the “ghost towns” you see in movies with a deserted dusty main street lined with tumbleweeds and rusty wagon wheels, the abandoned buildings, fences, and echoing marmot calls were certainly eerie on that rainy afternoon.
We began our hike from the little town up the mountain toward the lakes, stopping along the way at their favorite overlooks to attempt to get what vistas we could from the hazy horizons. By the time we made it up to Alta Lakes the weather had calmed down a bit and we found a bit of a break! The tiniest bit of sunset glow peaked through the clouds where the lakes met the sky; it was one of the most beautiful places I’ve seen and I cannot wait to go back on a sunny day!
As the sun continued its descent we hiked a back trail through the pines back to the ghost town, completing the adventure. Despite the challenges of rain, we ended up with some truly beautiful photographs from their Telluride engagement session at Alta Lakes! Take a peek at some of my favorite moments:
