Ouray Elopement Photographer

Photography + planning for couples who want towering peaks, alpine drama, and a San Juan mountain day that's entirely theirs.

Elopements in Ouray

Let me guess...

You've been looking at photos of those mountains — the ones that rise straight up on all sides and make you feel like you've stumbled into another country — and you can't stop thinking about them.

The waterfalls. The wildflowers. The way the peaks turn gold and pink at alpenglow. The ghost towns tucked into the hillsides like the mountain swallowed them whole.

You don't want a ballroom. You want all of that as your backdrop.

But then you started looking into it and realized Ouray is small, remote, and a little logistically complicated. Some of the best spots require a Jeep. You don't know what permits you need. And Telluride — the name everyone recognizes — feels like it might be more resort town than wild mountain adventure.

YOU'RE IN THE RIGHT SPOT.

Ouray is my favorite kind of place to work — and one of the most genuinely breathtaking corners of Colorado. And yes, I'll help you figure out every logistical detail so all you have to do is show up.

Ouray elopements are a great fit if you:

  • Want dramatic, vertical alpine scenery that feels genuinely wild
  • Love the idea of a mountain town with real historic character — not a ski resort
  • Are drawn to waterfalls, wildflowers, hot springs, and ghost towns all in the same day
  • Want the San Juan Mountain experience without Telluride's resort prices and crowds
  • Are up for a little offroad adventure to reach spots most couples never find

Yankee Boy Basin, Red Mountain Pass, Box Canyon, the Amphitheater, and beyond

Ouray sits at 7,800 feet in a box canyon — mountains rising on all four sides, a hot springs pool in the middle of town, and some of the most dramatic alpine scenery in North America within twenty minutes of the main street. It's called the Switzerland of America, and once you've been, you understand why immediately.

What makes Ouray special for elopements is the sheer variety packed into a small area. A sunrise Jeep ride to Yankee Boy Basin puts you in a wildflower-filled alpine basin surrounded by 13,000-foot peaks. A short walk from town gets you to Box Canyon Falls. Red Mountain Pass offers ghost towns and crystal lakes along one of the most scenic mountain drives in Colorado. And then you can soak in the hot springs at the end of the day. There is no single "Ouray elopement." There are a hundred versions of it, and we'll find yours.

A note on Telluride: it's beautiful, and I work there too. But if you're drawn to the San Juans for the wildness of it — the peaks, the history, the feeling of being somewhere genuinely remote — Ouray delivers all of that without the resort town price tag, the celebrity sightings, and the parking situation. Couples who find their way to Ouray instead almost always say they're glad they did.

When to Elope in Ouray

Summer (June–August) — Peak wildflower season hits earlier than some spots, mid- to late-June thru July. Jeep roads open up, alpine lakes are accessible, and the long summer days give you golden-hour light well into the evening. This is the most popular window for good reason.

Fall (September–October) — My second favorite. The aspens turn gold across the San Juans in late September and the crowds thin out considerably as school starts. The passes are stunning through early- mid-October before the first serious snows arrive.

Spring (May–June) — The shoulder season here is still beautiful — waterfalls are roaring from snowmelt, lower elevation spots are green and lush, and you have fewer crowds until school lets out. High alpine locations can still be snow-covered until late May or early June, but the valley around Ouray and lower passes are accessible and gorgeous.

Winter (November–April) — Ouray in winter is a different kind of magic — ice climbing on the canyon walls, snow-draped peaks, and the hot springs steaming in the cold air. Access to high alpine locations is limited, but the town itself and lower elevation spots are beautiful and very much elope-able. If you want a dramatically different winter San Juan experience, it's worth considering.

If you're totally new to altitude and the mountains, you'll want to familiarize yourself with the weather as it's pretty unique!

Month   |    Avg High / Low(°F)
January   25° / 3°
February   25° / 6°
March   36° / 15°
April   48° / 25°
May   58° / 33°
June   70° / 42°
July   65° / 43°
August   73° / 46°
September   65° / 37°
October   52° / 27°
November   38° / 16°
December   25° / 5°

Wildflower peak in the area is typically mid-June through mid-July. If this is important to you, plan around it.

Afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August — a normal part of summer "monsoon season" in the San Juans. I build timelines around them, and honestly? A little drama in the sky makes for better photos. We'll never be in an exposed location when there's a real lightning risk.

Offroad season for the high alpine locations typically runs early June through mid-October, depending on snowpack. Some years earlier, some years later — I'll always have current road conditions before your day.

Fall color peaks in late September at higher elevations and works its way down through early October. One of the most underrated times to elope in the San Juans.

Winter access to most alpine locations is limited or unavailable without snowmobile or snowshoe. The town, hot springs, and lower canyon areas are fully accessible year-round.

Best Time to Elope in Ouray

Weather in Ouray

Getting to Ouray

Ouray sits on US-550 in southwestern Colorado, about 98 miles south of Grand Junction and 70 miles north of Durango. It's a destination drive in the best possible way — the southern stretch into town on the Million Dollar Highway is one of the most dramatic roads in the country.

The closest airport is Montrose Regional (MTJ), about 40 miles north, with direct flights from Denver, Dallas, and Chicago. Durango-La Plata County Airport (DRO) is about 95 miles south and worth considering if you're flying in from the southwest. Grand Junction Regional (GJT) is about 100 miles north and offers the broadest range of flight options and year-round service.

If you're driving from Denver, the most common route is I-70 west to Grand Junction, then south on US-50 and US-550 through Montrose and Ridgway — about 300 miles and roughly six hours. An alternative scenic route (best in warmer months) takes US-285 south to US-50 west over Monarch Pass, then south on US-550. Either way, you end up on 550 heading south into Ouray.

From Grand Junction it's about an hour and forty-five minutes south on US-550. From Moab, plan for roughly three hours heading southwest through Monticello and Cortez.

TOP ouray Elopement Locations & Micro Wedding Venues

Gold Mountain Ranch
A newer Ouray venue perched above the town itself, Gold Mountain Ranch has some of the best birds-eye views of Ouray and the canyon it sits in. Minimal effort to get there, maximum payoff in terms of perspective on this remarkable little mountain town.

Best for couples who:

  • Want elevated views of Ouray itself as part of their backdrop
  • Are looking for a venue that handles more of the group logistics
  • Want something totally accessible without sacrificing the drama
Wright Opera House
A beautifully renovated historic opera house right in downtown Ouray — all the Victorian charm of the Beaumont but in a venue-forward setting better suited to slightly larger intimate gatherings. A great option if you want a ceremony and celebration in one downtown space.

Best for couples who:

  • Want a proper indoor venue with historic character
  • Are having a micro wedding with guests and need a defined event space
  • Love the idea of celebrating in a piece of Ouray's history
Hot Springs
The San Juans are dotted with natural hot springs — and the Ouray area has some of the best in Colorado, ranging from developed soaking pools to completely wild, remote springs accessible only by trail or Jeep. There's something about soaking in a natural hot spring with peaks towering above you that feels like the perfect punctuation to an elopement day.

Best for couples who:

  • Want to build a hot springs soak into their elopement day as part of the celebration
  • Love the idea of ending a big mountain day with something restorative and indulgent
  • Are drawn to the more remote, wild springs over developed facilities
  • Are eloping in shoulder season when steaming water and cold mountain air is particularly magical
Sneffels Views
Technically just outside Ridgway, about 40 minutes north of Ouray, Top of the Pines sits in a grassy meadow with some of the most jaw-dropping views of Mt. Sneffels and the surrounding San Juan peaks you'll find anywhere. It's a proper venue with a blank-canvas feel — the mountain backdrop does all the work. There are also elopement locations in the area with similar amazing views of Mt. Sneffels!

Best for couples who:

  • Want unobstructed views of Mt. Sneffels and the San Juans
  • Are having a small group of guests and want a defined venue space
  • Love the idea of a wildflower meadow ceremony with mountain panoramas
  • Want something slightly more structured than a backcountry location
The Beaumont Hotel
The Beaumont is Ouray's crown jewel of historic venues — a beautifully restored Victorian hotel right on Main Street with ornate interiors, a grand staircase, a courtyard space, and views of the surrounding peaks from every direction. My favorite use of this venue is pairing a mountainside ceremony in the morning with a reception or dinner at the Beaumont in the evening.

Best for couples who:

  • Want a mix of wild mountain ceremony and elegant indoor celebration
  • Are having guests and want a proper venue for the reception portion
  • Love historic architecture and Victorian-era character
  • Want to stay in the most beautiful hotel in town
The Western Hotel
Built in 1892 and one of the few remaining examples of a wood-frame frontier hotel from that era still standing in Colorado, the Western Hotel is a genuine piece of Ouray history. It has that authentic, unpolished mountain-town character that the more formal venues can't quite replicate — the kind of place that feels like it has stories baked into the walls.

Best for couples who:

  • Want historic character with a more rustic, frontier feel than the Beaumont
  • Love the idea of a venue that feels genuinely rooted in the Old West
  • Are having a small intimate gathering and want a unique, conversation-starting space
  • Want something distinctly Ouray that you couldn't find anywhere else

Alpine Lakes & Backcountry Basins
Beyond Yankee Boy, the Ouray area has countless alpine lakes and backcountry basins accessible by Jeep/OHV — and some that are totally accessible for the everyday person too. These are the spots I pull from my location database based on what sounds right for each specific couple.

Best for couples who:

  • Want an alpine lake setting with daring adventure
  • Are flexible on the specific location and just want these vibes
  • Love that "we were the only people up there" feeling
  • Want to explore beyond the well-known spots
  • Are well-versed in backcountry off-roading or happy to hire a Jeep transportation company
Red Mountain Pass & Ghost Towns
The drive over Red Mountain Pass on US-550 is one of the most spectacular mountain roads in North America — and the ghost towns tucked into the hillsides along the way are unlike anything else in Colorado. Abandoned mining towns, rusted machinery slowly being reclaimed by the mountain, and some of the most atmospheric and unexpected backdrops you'll find anywhere.

Crystal Lake sits along this stretch too — a stunning alpine lake with Red Mountain reflected in the water and peaks towering above.

Best for couples who:

  • Want something genuinely unusual and historically layered
  • Love moody, atmospheric backdrops with real character
  • Are drawn to the idea of a ghost town as part of their day
  • Want a mix of dramatic mountain scenery and offbeat storytelling
Ouray Amphitheater
The Ouray Amphitheater sits just above town, carved into the canyon walls — a natural rock formation that creates one of the most dramatic ceremony backdrops in Colorado. Ancient grey cliffs rise on all sides, and groves of aspen and pine fill in the softer edges. It's accessible by Jeep and feels genuinely tucked away despite being minutes from downtown.

Best for couples who:

  • Want dramatic canyon walls as their ceremony backdrop
  • Love aspen groves and a mix of rock and forest scenery
  • Want something close to town but that still feels completely wild
  • Are bringing a small group of guests and want a defined natural space
  • Have high clearance 4WD vehicles or are okay hiring transportation
Yankee Boy Basin
If there's one location that defines what Ouray elopements are capable of, it's Yankee Boy Basin. Sit at over 12,000 feet, surrounded by some of the tallest peaks in Colorado, with wildflowers covering every slope in mid-July and waterfalls tumbling down the canyon walls around you. It's the kind of place that makes people cry before the ceremony even starts.

The road in is 4WD high-clearance only — which is actually part of what makes it special. You're not walking past other people's picnic blankets to get there. I work with Jeep tour companies who can get you and your guests up safely and comfortably if you don't have your own rig.

Best for couples who:

  • Want the most dramatic alpine scenery the San Juans have to offer
  • Are eloping in summer and want to be surrounded by insane views with chances of wildflowers
  • Love the idea of a truly remote, high-altitude ceremony
  • Are comfortable driving one-lane sketchy mountain passes in offroad-capable vehicles or renting Jeep Tour transportation

Getting Married in Colorado: The Thing That Changes Everything

Same great news here as anywhere else in Colorado — the state allows self-solemnization, which means you can legally marry yourselves with no officiant required. Just the two of you, your vows, and a license you sign together. For couples who chose to elope specifically because they wanted something private and entirely their own, this is worth knowing.

How it works in Ouray County:

You'll get your marriage license from the Ouray County Clerk and Recorder's Office right in town. Both of you need to appear in person with a valid photo ID. There's no waiting period — you can pick it up the day before or the morning of your elopement. The license must be used within 35 days and returned within 63 days of the ceremony.

On your wedding day, you both sign the license as your own officiants. No one else needs to sign. Return it to the county clerk and you're officially, legally married in Colorado.

I always recommend confirming current fees and hours directly with the Ouray County Clerk before your trip, as these details can change.

One thing worth knowing: self-solemnization doesn't mean you can't have an officiant or guests — it just means you don't have to. Plenty of couples still want someone to hold the space and lead the ceremony. The difference is that in Colorado, it's entirely your choice.

A note on Jeep road logistics and your marriage license: if you're planning a backcountry ceremony at Yankee Boy Basin or another high alpine remote location, I'd strongly recommend picking up your license the day before rather than the morning of — one less thing to coordinate on a day with an early start. It's also important that all your in-person vendors know this so they can prepare.

Eloping Responsibly in the Alpine

The landscapes around Ouray are breathtaking precisely because they're fragile. Alpine ecosystems sit at the edge of what plants and wildlife can survive — and the wildflower meadows, lake shorelines, and backcountry basins that make this area so extraordinary can take decades to recover from careless use.

A few things worth knowing specifically about eloping in this terrain:

High alpine meadows around Ouray are home to some spectacular wildflower displays — and those flowers grow in soil that can be permanently damaged by foot traffic off established paths. The "just one photo in the flowers" instinct is understandable, but staying on rock and established trails protects what makes the place worth photographing in the first place.

Alpine lake shorelines are similarly sensitive — fragile tundra and soil along the banks don't recover quickly from repeated disturbance. We always work from established access points.

The ghost towns along Red Mountain Pass are largely protected historic sites. Nothing gets moved, taken, or disturbed — which honestly makes for better images anyway, since the decay and atmosphere is the whole point.

As a Leave No Trace certified photographer, responsible elopements are something I take seriously on every single shoot — not as a rulebook, but because I genuinely love these places and want them to stay exactly like this.

Here's what that looks like in practice:

  • We stay on established trails, rock surfaces, and designated areas
  • No confetti, flower petals, rice, or anything that doesn't leave with us
  • Pack it in, pack it out — always (yes that includes TP!)
  • We respect historic sites and leave everything exactly as we found it
  • We choose locations and timing that minimize impact on wildlife and other visitors

The good news — and I genuinely mean this — is that the most responsible spots are almost always the most beautiful ones. Following these principles has never once gotten in the way of incredible images.

Amanda was the best decision we made for our wedding day! The photos are exceptional and perfectly capture the scenery and vibe we were going for, but that’s only a portion of what Amanda provided. She helped give us planning guidance, organization, and reassurance throughout, which alleviated all the worries we had about eloping in a place we’d never been before.

Amanda is the perfect wedding photographer. The photos perfectly captured the whole day and I feel like I can easily relive it just by looking back at the photos. I highly recommend Amanda.

Elopement Timeline Example

What do we DO all day?

More timeline info

It's not really about "What do we do all day??" -- it's more like "What CAN we do all day?" You should plan a day that sounds like the most fun you can imagine: whatever that looks like to you. Star gazing? Coffee and brunch? A trip to a book store? ATVing? Overlooking a cool new park? Get excited about the possibilities!

5:00 - DINNER

Whether you make dinner reservations at a nice restaurant in town, grab tacos from your favorite shop, hire a private chef to treat you to a fine meal in your vacation rental, or bring a picnic on our adventure in nature.

4:30 - GROUP PHOTOS

Spend some time taking photos with everyone in attendance in this beautiful place you've made this next step in your adventure together. Those images you'll look back at on their birthdays each year.

3:30 - CEREMONY

You (and any guests you have) head out to your ceremony location where you'll exchange vows, rings, a unity ceremony and sign the papers to make things official. Share a toast or speeches to celebrate.

2:30 - GETTING READY

Getting ready at your vacation rental or campsite. You help each other get ready, put on a pot of coffee, and take your time as you begin your elopement time. This is our ice breaker, so I'm not showing up at go-time.

6:30 - ACTIVITIES

After dinner, you can spend the time until sunset exploring the area, hiking, fishing, taking photos with amazing views, seeing new sights, eating dessert, and spending time however you would like to most! We'll get those iconic photos and those stunning candids you love so much and will hang on the wall to relive these moments any time.

8:30 - SUNSET & STARS

Watch the sunset together. Eat a snack or some cake while the stars begin to come out. Stargaze and take some photos with the milky way as you end your new favorite day.

Eloping should feel as good as it looks.

Telluride is beautiful — I work there too. But if what you're drawn to is the wildness of the San Juans, the genuine remoteness, the feeling of being somewhere that hasn't been polished for tourists — Ouray delivers all of that without the resort town price tag, the celebrity-sighting atmosphere, and the parking situation.

Couples who choose Ouray over Telluride almost always say they're glad they did. It feels more real. More mountain. More like the Colorado they came looking for.

"Why Ouray over Telluride?"

"Is Ouray accessible if we're not big hikers?"

Yes — and this is one of the things I love most about working here. Many of the most dramatic locations around Ouray are Jeep-accessible rather than hike-accessible. Yankee Boy Basin, the Amphitheater, alpine lakes and passes — you can be sitting at 12,000 feet in a wildflower meadow without having earned it on foot. The Jeep ride itself becomes part of the day.

If you want to hike, there are beautiful options at every fitness level. If you'd rather ride up and walk around once you're there, that works too. Your elopement should feel good — not like a fitness test.

Completely normal in the San Juans in summer — and something I plan around on every single elopement. I only book one event per day, which means we have full flexibility to shift timing around the forecast. Morning starts get us into the high alpine before the storms build. And honestly? A little drama in the sky over a mountain basin makes for some of the most extraordinary images I've ever taken.

We'll never be in an exposed location when there's a real lightning risk. But a few clouds rolling over the peaks? That's just the San Juans doing what they do.

"What about the afternoon storms?"

I hear this constantly. And after spending a day together in the San Juans, couples always tell me how natural and easy it felt.

Here's the thing about Ouray: when you're genuinely somewhere that takes your breath away — in an alpine basin ringed by 13,000-foot peaks, watching wildflowers move in the wind, soaking in a remote hot spring as the mountains turn gold around you — you forget to be self-conscious. You're too busy actually feeling something.

My job is to be there when that happens. Not to pose you into something that doesn't feel like you, but to document the day as it actually unfolds.

You don't have to be extreme athletes. You don't have to hike ten miles. You don't have to look a certain way or perform anything for the camera.

Come as you are. You're welcome here.

"We're awkward in photos."

I hear this one a lot. Many of the classic locations requires a Jeep and knowledge of how to handle backcountry mountain roads. Some of the best locations are at altitude. The season is compressed. It sounds complicated.

Here's the reality: the logistics that feel intimidating from a screen are the exact things I handle as part of working here. I know which locations need Jeep access and which don't. I have trusted companies who get couples up those roads safely every summer. I know when the wildflowers peak, when the afternoon storms typically roll in, and how to work with the mountain rather than against it. You don't need to figure any of that out. That's what I'm here for.

And it should feel manageable — not like a mountaineering expedition.

That starts with choosing a place that actually excites you — not just one that photographs well.

Ouray is the kind of place that gets under your skin. Couples who find their way here almost always say the same thing afterward: they didn't realize a place like this existed, and they can't believe they almost went somewhere else. If you've been drawn to these mountains and you're not sure why, trust that instinct. It knows something.
